Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus. It may implant in the fallopian tube, the uterus, the abdominal wall, or the cervix.

Signs and Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnnacy

  • You may miss your period and have irregular bleeding and spotting.
  • You may feel lower abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • You may feel pelvic pain when having sex.
  • You may experience normal pregnancy symptoms.
  • If your fallopian tube ruptures you may feel severe pain in the area, shoulder pain caused by internal bleeding, and be dizzy or faint.

What are the Risk Factors for an Ectopic Pregnancy?

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
  • Progestin contraceptives .
  • Pregnancy after tubal ligation.
  • Surgery on a fallopian tube.
  • Infertility problems and stimulated ovulation.
  • Previous ectopic pregnancies.

How is an Ectopic Pregnancy Treated?
If the ectopic pregnancy is discovered early on, it can sometimes be treated with an injection of methotrexate. This works to dissolves the fertilized egg and allows your body to reabsorb it. This procedure is nonsurgical and reduces any scarring of your pelvic organs.

If the ectopic pregnancy is discoverd when you are further along, you’ll probably need a surgical procedure – using laparoscopy or a major operation.

Will an Ectopic Pregnancy Affect Future Pregnancies?
Unfortunately there is a 30% chance that you will have problems becoming pregnant, especially if a fallopian tube was removed in a surgical procedure. You have an approximate 15% chance of having another ectopic pregnancy.
